1. Cells--
The basic unit of structure and function in the human body. A cell is a collection of organelles functioning together.
Examples:
red blood cell, neuron (nerve cell), bone cell, white blood cell, skin cell
2. Tissue--
A group of specialized cells working together to perform a specific function.
Examples:
connective, epithelial, muscle, nervous (see the image to the right.
3. Organ--
Two or more types of tissues that work together to complete a specific task.
Examples:
brain, lungs, bone (femur), tongue, stomach, heart, blood
4. Organ System--
Several organs working in unison to achieve a common function.
Examples:
Circulatory, muscular, skeletal, nervous, endocrine, integumentary, immune, respiratory, excretory, reproductive, digestive
5. Organism--
Several organ systems working together.
Examples:
Cactus, elm tree, lion, human, plant, dog, cat, fish, sunflower, butterfly, elephant, crow, horse, banana tree, apple tree, daisy, rose, turtle, rice plant, corn, watermelon, strawberry, parrot, llama, etc.
